Save-A-Pet Holds “St. Pitty’s Day” Party to Raise Awareness and Funds For Shelter’s Pit Bulls

More than 100 guests showed up at Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, Inc.’s “St. Pitty’s Day” party, held on March 16. Those in attendance were looking to support the shelter, learn more about the pit bull breed, and meet and greet the many companion animals that are all up for adoption at Save-A-Pet.
Front and center were Blarney and Clover, two of the “Fab Four” pit bulls that were recently rescued from deplorable conditions in Mastic, after their owner moved out of the state. Both dogs seemed to love the attention being lavished on them by visitors and volunteers alike. One of the four, Patty, has already found a loving home. Shamrock, another female member of the “Fab Four,” is still being treated for internal parasites and should be available for adoption soon.
“We have so many pit bulls here at Save-A-Pet,” said Founder/President Dori Scofield. “An event like this gives the public a chance to come down, meet the dogs, learn more about pit bulls, and see for themselves how positively this breed responds to love and proper treatment.”
Guests enjoyed an authentic Irish buffet of corned beef and cabbage, Irish soda bread, delicious desserts, beer, and Irish beverages, which were all prepared by Save-A-Pet’s staff and volunteers. More than $1,000 was raised for the shelter and its animals.
Four dogs were adopted as a result of the party. “The best part about an event like this is that after people meet these dogs and see how terrific they are, we get a lot of applications for their adoption,” Ms. Scofield said.
Lynne Schoepfer, executive director of Save-A-Pet, seconds that notion. “Pit bulls are such a misunderstood breed of dog. When they are treated with kindness and love, they make wonderful family pets. Once people meet them in person, they can’t believe how sweet they are.”
