Microchip Your Pet

Save-A-Pet is now available to do microchipping at our shelter at a cost of $50 per animal. We will microchip your dog or cat and register your pet in the national database. Microchipping is a simple procedure that takes only a few seconds and it will help ensure your pets safe return home. If you are interested, please call for an appointment .

A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is implanted under the skin via a syringe. When a pet is lost and winds up at a local shelter or veterinarian, a wand like scanner is waved over the dog to check for a micro chip. The scanner beeps telling you a microchip has been found and the animals chip number appears on the screen. One simple call to the national database, and your pet is safely returned. Remember, collars and tags can be lost but a micro chip lasts a life time.

C.L.I.F.F.S Clinic-Feral Cat TNR program (Trap, Neuter, Return)

They live among us all. They live in the woods, under decks, behind restaurants and just about everywhere imaginable. They are the forgotten cats of our community. It begins with a domestic cat, abandoned by irresponsible owners and left to breed and have litter after litter. The kittens grow up and, since they have no human contact, become unsocial and "wild". They continue the breeding process and within seven years can produce over 400,000 cats. But you can help these innocent victims of human abandonment.  Through our new spay/neuter clinic, you can begin a Trap, Neuter, and Return program right in your yard or neighborhood.  We have affordable low cost spay/neuter and vaccinations.  Contact us, extension 204.

Who do they belong to?

They belong to us all, and we are all responsible for them. Their fate is up to each and every person. They need to be spayed and neutered and re-released. If the area they are from is unsafe, then they need to be relocated to another area where they will be safe and cared for. They ask for little. A clean bowl of food and water and a small doghouse filled with hay is all they need. They will become more docile with other cats once they are sterilized and in turn will keep the spread of disease down to a minimum. They will not spray urine or be howling in the night. They deserve our help and depend on us for their safety. Save-A-Pet is dedicated to helping these cats. To learn more download our C.L.I.F.F.S Clinic brochure.

Pet Bequest Program

Whether we have a dog or cat, bird or other animal friend, our pets spend their lifetime giving us unconditional love, affection and acceptance. However, every year thousands of pets are orphaned in the United States. Unfortunately, our own beloved pets may be included in this tragic statistic if we fail to provide for them in the event we pass away or become incapacitated. It is important to remember that when we choose to bring a pet into our family, we have made the choice to care for that pet for the rest of its lifetime-not just the rest of our own lifetime! When a pet owner passes away or becomes incapable of caring for pets, often there is no one else who is willing or able to care for these pets, resulting in a double tragedy-the loss or incapacity of the pet owner and the creation of orphaned pets!

One way pet owners can prevent their pets from becoming orphans is to actually include provisions for the pets in an estate plan. Providing for your pets can be as simple as making a request in your Will or Living Trust that your pets be placed with a willing friend or family member, much like appointing a guardian for a child. Most states also allow for money to be set aside for the benefit of pets as part of an estate plan. A “pet trust”usually appoints a trustee to care for your pets or to find them the loving, permanent home they deserve, and provides the trustee with funds to be used for the pet's benefit. Another option is to make a gift of funds directly to the new caretaker for the pet's ongoing needs and care. All you need to do is ask your attorney to include your pet in your Will or Living Trust. Emergency Evacuation Preparedness

Emergency Evacuation Preparedness

Planning in advance of a natural disaster or weather emergency is essential for your personal safety and that of all members of your household, including your pets. Pets depend on us even more when disaster strikes. Including steps that ensure their safety and well-being before, during and after a disaster should be an important component of your emergency preparedness plan.

Contingencies to accommodate your pets' safety whether the disaster confines you to your home or compels your evacuation must be considered. When disaster strikes a community, essential services like water and electricity may be temporarily interrupted. What steps can you take to prepare for and mitigate the effects of a disaster on such services? In many cases, evacuation centers will not accept evacuees' pets. What can you do to ensure your pets' safety during and after a disaster?

Buy-A-Brick Program

On September 1, 2000, Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center opened its doors in Port Jefferson Station, New York. In order to continually improve the shelter, we began building a beautiful walkway and garden named after our favorite Neapolitan Mastiff, “Waldo”. Waldo was rescued from a cruel life and this Walk of Hope is dedicated in his honor. It signifies the hope that we all share, that all animals will be adopted into loving homes.

You can be part of the Walk of Hope by purchasing a personalized brick in support of Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center. The bricks will be installed as part of our a permanent walking path entrance to our center.

All donations are tax-deductible and will be used to help support the Center and its programs.

Use this beautiful gesture to honor a loved one, beloved pet, celebrate a special occasion or make a personal statement. To learn more download our Buy-A-Brick Program brochure.
